MEETING REPORT: THURSDAY 7th September 2006
New Treasurer
Our new Treasurer is Dick Milner who was welcomed to the society. Members are delighted that Dick has agreed to take on this role.

Puzzle Session- Robin Waddling
The meeting started with a puzzle/informal astronomy competition. If you missed the meeting you can find the questions with answers in the Members Area

Optical Illusions - Brian Thomas
Brian showed various optical illusions which seems fitting for those interested in what is very much an observational science.

Partial Lunar Eclipse
During the break in our meeting, members gathered outside to observe the partial lunar eclipse, which was clearly evident despite the cloud and haze. Phil Wallace was able to produce a number of pairs of binocculars which were greatly appreciated.

Faulkes Telescope Update - Brian Thomas
Both telescopes should be available for our use in a couple of months. It was decided that we would go for a booking on FTS and explore the southern skies.

The John Noble Telescope Update - David Taylor
This 10" telescope had been donated to the society by Mr John Noble a few months ago. David gave us an account of his work on restoring what will be a very useful instrument. It has a very sturdy base with an equatorial mount. David anticipates that when the servicing has been completed it will be a very worthy instrument. Members were very appreciative of David's work on this project.

The Sharpest Ever View of the Orion Nebula- Brian Thomas
Brian presented a tour of this famous nebula (M42) using what the Hubble telescope team has described as the sharpest view ever. The detail in these images is amazing. It is well worth visiting the Amazing Space website. Here you will find an excellent description and an interactive image where you can select areas and zoom in to see the excellent detail. Brian produced a summary handout with a colour image of this marvellous object, which was much appreciated.
