Noctilucent Clouds - Brian Thomas In response to members' requests Brian gave an overview of this topic. The clouds are now thought to be the result of ice nucleation around dust particles with a terrestrial origin. They become visible when illuminated by the setting sun, when it is just below the horizon. This is best observed in the northern hemisphere in June and July and from latitudes between 50 and 65 degrees. The clouds themselves appear to correspond to four types, based upon their visual appearance, and are typically found at altitudes of 80-85 km. The Noctilucent Cloud Obervers Page is a good starting point.
