Where is the Smelliest Place in the Galaxy? - Robin Waddling Robin Waddling posed us this question and suggested that to answer it we need three pieces of information. What is the smell? Where is it? How do we know? He then invited the members to consider various solar system bodies such as Io, Venus and Jupiter. Having considered this question Robin suggested that the smelliest chemical would probably be methyl mercaptan , CH3SH. This has been detected as a maser in the Sagittarius B cloud towards the centre of our galaxy. Robin completed his presentation with a brief explanation of the maser process illustrated with some simple animations on his PowerPoint presentation.
Does the Sun Rotate? - Lesley Milner Lesley Milner presented a practical activity to enable us to answer the question. This was based on an investigation that she uses with pupils in her primary school. Members were engaged with the task and enjoyed the activity.
The meeting closed after much general discussion over a wide range of topics. Dark matter and dark energy continuing to make their presence felt!
